Seed Oil Free Cast Iron Wax Seasoning Compound

Elevate your cast iron game with my homemade seasoning wax blend.  Whether you're starting from bare metal, building on the seasoning of your pan, or maintaining, this wax compound will do what you need it to!

When beeswax is added to a seasoning compound, it creates a smooth and shiny surface that you never knew you could have with cast iron until you try this.  Beeswax is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water, which is wonderful for your seasoning to repel any moisture and prevent rust, something that is always a challenge with cast iron.

A blend of rendered beef tallow from our cattle, organic coconut oil, and locally sourced beeswax (Ohio) in 2 ounce containers.  We choose to use good fats instead of seed oils because why would we season our cast iron with oils we wouldn't want to eat!  

Seasoning:  Wash (with soap) and thoroughly dry your cast iron pan.  Heat to ensure it is dry and then add a small piece of the seasoning compound and wipe the entire surface, top and bottom including the handle, with the cast iron wax.  Using a clean cotton towel, wipe the compound off like you didn't meat to put it there.  Bake in a 400F oven for 1 hour, shut the oven off, then let the pan cool completely before removing (letting it sit overnight is best).  Repeat 3-4 times for new seasoning layers.

Maintenance:  After using your pan, clean with soap and water and dry.  Place on a burner on your stove over low heat and allow the pan to gently heat and dry completely.  Add a small piece of seasoning compound and wipe the cooking surface and sides of the pan with the seasoning compound and a lint free cotton towel.  Allow the oil to smoke for about 30 seconds, then remove from the heat and allow the pan to cool.  Then store the pan.  Do this after every time you wash it for best care and performance of your pans.
